Mardi Gras Re-cap

Huge thanks to everyone who came out and participated in our Mardi Gras-themed February social! Comrade Hamilton, a New Orleans native, was our DJ and Chef Kay cooked up some tasty gumbo and King Cake. Those who received the “baby” in the cake — which symbolizes luck and prosperity — went home with a prize. Let the good times roll!

Flag recycling event March 25

We’re hosting our first ever flag recycling event on the 25th at 2 p.m. at the post. We’ve collected more than 300 discarded flags. We used to dispose of the flags by burning them but neighbors complained and we agreed: this is not an environmentally friendly solution. We did our research and discovered that discarded flags can be properly disposed of by shredding and recycling the fabric, which is a win-win! If you have a pair of fabric shears and would like to help shred, please join us! Also feel free to drop off your unserviceable flags.

MREs+Trivia Recap

For our January social the post hosted its first ever trivia night, which featured MREs and Metamucil (thanks Comrade Hamilton!). Some opted not to eat the MREs and instead save one for their disaster kit, while others sampled the many tastes and textures of a modern MRE. Comrade Commander Teeter was the trivia master and she had some hiccups, like accidently showing the answer on the slide. But overall folks had a good time and there were two tie breaker rounds between Team Four Horseman+1 (Basher, Brock, English, Gopher, Fitzgerald) and Team OGs (Lawrence, Stoltz’s, Seelig). The OGs, because they’re OGs, eventually won the top prize of Sloop gift certificates. Thanks to everyone who came out and participated; we will be sure to schedule a trivia night later this year.

Mid-Winter Conference Brings Comrades and Essay Finalists to Yakima

Congratulations to our essay winners who all performed amazingly at the state level! The Voice of Democracy finalists and the Patriot’s Pen winner were recognized at a banquet Jan. 21 at the end of the VFW Department Mid-Winter Conference in Yakima.


Our Voice of Democracy winner, Annika Trippel (pictured below left), won at the district level and went on to place FOURTH PLACE at state!


Our Patriot’s Pen winner, Ciara Fitzgerald (pictured below right), won at the district level and won FIRST PLACE at state! She’ll go on to compete at the national level — best wishes Ciara!


Our Youth Essay winner, XiaoTian O’Donohue, won at the district level and won FIRST PLACE for all fourth grade finalists in the state.


Congratulations again to Annika, Ciara and XiaoTian for their outstanding efforts. Thank you for honoring veterans through your words and actions! We are immensely proud.
